London Chaos
London, 2018 · A chapter of Chaos Under Construction
I made London Chaos in London in 2018. It is a chapter within Chaos Under Construction, with a separate selection of photographs. Brick houses, winter trees, church towers and the occasional flowering bush recur across the pictures. A familiar street breaks into several versions of itself. Rooflines change direction, branches cross windows, and red, yellow and blue spread across the buildings.
The collage takes shape while I am photographing. I keep moving, watching the different parts of the image gather and separate. The arrangement can disappear before I have understood why it worked. Often there is too much going on. Then a line, a roof or a patch of colour gives the whole picture a structure.
There is a particular hope that comes with taking a camera for a walk: perhaps today all the things I cannot arrange will fall into place. In these photographs there are more of those things, and more ways to lose the picture. I enjoy the chase. What keeps me looking is the possibility of finding a city I could walk past every day and still not have seen like this.
