More Members Than the Band

Two musicians stand in black against an industrial waterfront. The first photograph fixes the expected unit of a band portrait: two performers, one lineup, one site. Subsequent images stop keeping count. Translucent repetitions enter the frame. A seated body and a standing body occupy the same space. One participant becomes several; the pair expands into a temporary ensemble made by the photograph.

Faces, clothes, postures and the relation between the two musicians remain visible as bodies repeat. Recognition no longer guarantees a singular body or a fixed number of members. Colour shifts, layered exposures and reflected light make the collective identity of the performers mobile.

Made during a musician portrait session in 2018 and re-edited from the archive in 2026, More Members Than the Band turns a practical photographic task into a six-image study of lineup, repetition and photographic excess. The pair remains visible inside the larger, temporary group produced by the image.
