During lockdown, I poured liquid acrylic over old portraits. These six came out of hundreds of experiments. I liked making them; deciding whether they counted as art was more difficult.

A return to Nansen Street in Rostov-on-Don, remembered as wild and charged, meets an unexpectedly ordinary landscape. Fourteen photographs use handmade optics, sunlight and in-camera colour replacement to make recognition flicker between houses, garages, passing bodies and near-abstraction.

Ten photographs made through a train window. Movement, glass and the camera repeatedly alter the landscape, cutting, reflecting, smearing and recolouring it before the final image turns towards the empty carriage from which the sequence was seen.
